The Roman Capital letters, still in use as our modern alphabet, are the formal letterforms that were carved into monuments and buildings and used for important manuscripts. The lower case letters, or Caroline miniscules, are the result of Charlemagne (leader of the Holy Roman Empire) and his efforts to create a consistent, more economical writing style. These were the prototype for our modern small letters.

The names for these letters originated from where they were housed in the typeshop. Capitals were stored in the upper section of a typecase, while small letters were kept in the lower section. When setting type, a printer would take the metal type from either the upper or the lower case.
