The preliminary layout for Roman inscription letters was made with a square-edge reed writing tool or by a marking devise such as two pencils tied together and held at a constant cant (angle). This produced the thick and thin stroke gradations, as well as serifs, of the Roman alphabet. These origins are still visible in modern serif typefaces.
